Overview

What is Salted Caramel?

Salted Caramel is a women-first dating app in India. Men pay a small token — a toffee, worth a few rupees — to send a ‘hi’ to a woman. Each week, a woman sees the top 15 gestures directed at her, ranked by how much attention was invested. She replies to whichever she wants. The rest are never seen.

The premise

Dating apps stopped filtering when ‘hi’ was free. An average woman on Bumble or Hinge in an Indian metro gets hundreds of new messages a week — nearly all of them one-word openers. Salted Caramel puts a small price on the opener so senders think before they send. Fewer messages. Better ones.

The mechanic in one line

He sends a toffee → she sees fifteen names per week → she replies to who she wants → the rest are never seen.

Availability

  • Country: India.
  • Platform: Google Play (Android). iOS in development.
  • Pricing: Free for women; free to join for men, small in-app tokens (toffees) paid per gesture. No premium tier gates who you can reach.
  • Verification: selfie verification for all profiles before they appear in a feed.

Key differences from other dating apps

  • Openers are paid, not free.
  • A woman’s feed is a curated weekly fifteen — not an infinite swiping queue.
  • No 24-hour chat timers, no streaks, no premium tier that unlocks who you can message.
  • Silence is a valid answer — men are never told a woman passed on their gesture.

Who built it

Salted Caramel is built in India for the Indian dating market. The team’s design brief was ‘skip the 500 hellos’ — a women-first product where the mechanics do the filtering that the other apps stopped doing.
